The Foundry in London’s trendy Shoreditch shutdown on the 30th of May to make way for a luxury hotel on the site. A group of squatters occupied the building in protest against the gentrification of the area. London, UK. 28/06/10

The squatters are now under threat of eviction, with bailiffs scheduled to arrive imminently to clear the building for demolition. They say that they plan to resist the eviction and have barricaded all entrances to the building and chained themselves to the front door.

Far right nationalists clashed with Muslim extremists as the Royal Anglian Regiment marched through Barking after returning from deployment in Afghanistan.

About 50 members of a group called Muslims Against the Crusades heckled soldiers shouting “murderers” and brandished placards proclaiming “British soldiers are cowards” during a homecoming parade for troops.
They were met with counter-demonstration of nationalists including members of the extreme anti Islam English Defence League shouting “scum” and “Allah, Allah, who the f***k is Allah”.
The rival groups faced off across Barking’s main shopping street.
Moments after the soldiers passed by tensions reached boiling point as nationalists broke police lines and charged across the road, clashing with the Muslim protesters.
Police quickly separated the two groups and escorted the Islamists to the tube station.

EDL Aylesbury – Anti-Islam Demo Turns Violent

Dozens of protesters were arrested during violence clashes with police at a controversial demonstration by anti-Islam campaigners in Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire. Aylesbury, UK. 01/05/10

Around 1,000 members of the English Defence League (EDL) marched to Aylesbury’s Market Square chanting “if you build your f**king mosque, we’ll burn it down” and other anti-Muslim slogans.
The march ended when a group of 200 demonstrators tried to break through police lines hurling glass bottles, coins, sticks and cans at offices in riot gear.
Police arrested 12 EDL supporters, eight on suspicion of possessing offensive weapons, three for public order offences and one for being drunk and disorderly.
Aylesbury’s police commander Superintendent Richard List said that “most of the day passed off peacefully but unfortunately there were outbreaks of violence and disorder which had to be dealt with by police officers”.
EDL say they are merely protesting against militant Islam and the construction of “mega-mosques”.
Today’s clash in Buckinghamshire was the latest in a series of demonstrations that have resulted in street battles between Muslim youth, anti-fascist protesters and EDL supporters.
This morning more than 100 Unite Against Fascism (UAF) protesters, made up of local people including trade unions and religious groups, gathered in the town’s Vale Park.
The UAF claim that the EDL is an extreme right wing organisation made up of football hooligans with links to neo-Nazi groups.
Muhammad Saleem a spokesperson from the UAF said that “despite their best efforts, the EDL was unable to break the harmonious coexistence between different ethnic and religious groups in and around Aylesbury”.
The EDL emerged in March last year after a small group of Muslim anti-war protesters heckled soldiers from the Royal Anglian Regiment who were parading through Luton after a tour in Afghanistan. Local football supporters clashed with the anti-war demonstrators and as a result of this formed the now infamous group.

EDL Dudley Clashes at Right-Wing Demo

Police arrested 12 people on Saturday after far-right EDL demonstrators clashed with officers during an anti Islam protest in the West Midlands town of Dudley, 03-04-10.

Under heavy police escort around 3000 English Defense League (EDL) protesters marched on Dudley town center to protest against the construction of a new mosque.
There were outbreaks of disorder when containment fences were knocked over during the demonstrations. Barriers were torn down and hundreds of EDL protesters broke police lines, charged into the streets of Dudley and in the direction of the Unite Against Fascism counter protest.

EDL Bolton – Dozens Arrested in Clashes at Rally

EDL March on Parliament

About 400 members of the English Defence League marched in support of far right Dutch MP Dutch Geert Wilders as police tried to keep them apart from anti-fascist counter-protesters. UK, London – 07.03.10.


Earlier Wilders had shown his anti-Islam film in the House of Lords sparking angry scenes outside Parliament.
The mostly white crowd assembled outside Tate Britain, downriver from parliament, to listen to speeches by EDL leaders. Guramit Singh the only south Asian supporter present addressed the crowd calling “on all religions” to “eradicate Islam”. He ended his speech to a cheering crowd proclaiming “God bless the Muslims, they’ll need it when they’re burning in fucking hell”.
Flanked by mounted police, the far right demonstrators, marched towards Parliament chanting “no surrender” and waving St George flags. They were kept apart from dozens of anti- racism demonstrators, who gathered outside the Houses of Parliament, by police officers. Around 50 united against fascism protesters had earlier been arrested for blocking the road.

Scottish Defence League Humiliated in Edinburgh

Around 100 right-wing anti-Islam protesters were corralled in a pub by police, while 3000 anti-racism demonstrators marched through Edinburgh city centre.

Scotland’s capital was brought to a standstill as a force of 700 police officers were deployed keep the two rival groups apart.
Scotland United, , a coalition of politicians, faith groups, and trade unions staged a peaceful march from Prince Street Gardens to Edinburgh Central Mosque. Osama Saeed, SNP candidate for Glasgow Central, who led the rally said “today was further humiliation for the SDL, they got 10 minutes in the rain last November in Glasgow , they didn’t even get that today”.
The Scottish Defence League, an offshoot of the English Defence League are a anti-Muslim group made up of football casuals and British loyalist, spent most of their day detained inside a police cordon on Edinburgh’s Royal mile.

English Defence League Rally Stoke

The English Defence League (EDL) clashed with police as anti-Muslim protest turned violent. UK, Stoke – 23.01.10.

Over 1500 members of the right-wing group started drinking from 11am ahead of Saturday’s march in Stoke. There were scuffles with police when members of the EDL tried to break a cordon preventing them from clashing with members of anti-fascist groups. They sang the National Anthem and Rule Britannia, while others waved St George and Union flags while shouting abusive chants against Muslims. After the main demonstration a group of around 500 EDL marched thought a predominantly Asian area damaging shops and cars.

English Defence League Rally Nottingham

UK, Nottingham – 05.12.09. English Defence League (EDL) clash with police after a rally in the city centre turned violent. Around 700 EDL marched through Nottingham chanting “Muslim bombers off our streets & no surrender to the Taliban”. A counter protest was held by Unite Against Fascism (UAF) and supporters, who clam that the EDL is racist organisation. There were sporadic skirmishes between EDL member and UAF protesters. The police made a number of arrests and closed major roads during the protests. The EDL clam that they are simply protesting against radical Islam.

Scottish Defence League Rally Glasgow

UK, Glasgow – 14.11.09. Over 1,500 anti-fascists protesters marched through Glasgow city center, in opposition to the Scottish Defence League (SDL). Antifascists Stop BNP Press Conference

London Demonstration Against Attack on Gaza Aid Flotilla

On the morning of May 31st, a humanitarian aid flotilla sailing to Gaza to deliver essential supplies was attacked by Israeli commandos.
There are unconfirmed reports that up to 20 activist were killed during the attack on the Turkish Humanitarian Aid ship the “Mavi Marmara”.
A number of British nationals from different organizations were on board and at this stage, it is not clear who has been killed.
The Stop the War Coalition, in conjunction with the British Muslim Initiative, Palestinian Solidarity Campaign and a number of Trade Unions called an emergency protest outside Downing Street.
Speeches were given by the heads of the various organizations including Kate Hudson, Loindsay German, Tariq Ali and Low-Key.
After the speeches, the crowd amounting to several thousand people made its way down Whitehall, past the Houses of Parliament and on to the Israeli Embassy.

London, UK – 16.01.10. The Gaza Remembrance ‘Die-In’ in Trafalgar Square, on Saturday remembered the 1417 men, women and children killed during the 22 days of Israeli attacks on Gaza a year ago. Protesters at the “Democracy Village” camp opposite the Houses of Parliament shouted antiwar slogans as Queen Elizabeth’s made her way to address the Members of Parliament on Tuesday. London, UK. 25 May 2010

Earlier police searched the camp ahead of the State Opening of Parliament. Anti-war campaigner Brian Haw, who has been living on the green since 2001, and another protester Barbara Tucker were charged with obstructing police following their arrest during the search.
The camp, a collection of tents and colourful banners dubbed Democracy Village, sprang up on the 1st of May and anti-war demonstrators, climate change activists, and anti capitalist protesters have been living there every since.
During the peaceful protest on Tuesday, participants played music and held banners calling for changes to Britain’s electoral system.
A camper know as Tracey, dressed up as a cabaret queen told onlookers “I’m the new Queen. Liz can ride her bike. I’ve got her a bike over there.”
One of the protesters, prepared a banner reading: “We respect the soldiers but we do not support the war”.
He was keen to emphasise the camps’ non-violent protest message, “People are naive about modern day war – it’s portrayed as clean but actually it has got dirtier. The weapons are more lethal and barbaric – wiping out human lives with the touch of a button”.
He went on to say that he is “not overly fussed about the theatrics” of other protesters – which today included an alternative, somewhat alcohol fuelled, Queen’s speech from the Square’s Tracey.
Tracey and her husband Tarquin are “the resident drunks” says Gareth, a land activist from Kew Bridge eco-village.
Gareth said the couple, alongside some activists such as the Election Meltdown group, are part of a minority who distract the public from the cause of the majority.
Some of the Democratic Village were annoyed when activists from the Election Meltdown group sent out a press release regarding their alternative speech, without consulting anyone.
Appealing against the demonstrators removal from the Square, Gareth said the protest was respectful and non-violent, adding: “It’s not exactly an easy ride – we’re living on a traffic island with the most horrific pollution”.
Mayor of London Boris Johnson is seeking legal action to remove the demonstrators camping in Parliament Square.

Rail Workers Defend Safety Rules

Transport unions from across Europe held a mass rally of hundreds of railway workers in Lille, France, to protest against the EU-driven privatization of the industry.
Union activist began the day by blocking roads, lighting flares and blowing horns outside the European Railway Agency (ERA) headquarters.
Bob Crow general secretary of the Rail, Maritime and Transport union delivered a letter to the ERA demanding they give a “clear commitment to rail safety” and assurances that jobs will not be lost “in the interests of competition and profit.”

10,000 in protest to protect the welfare state and public services

Up to 10,000 pensioners, students, carers, health professionals, the unemployed and trade unionists took to the street to warn the main political parties that they should think again before making cuts to the welfare state and public services. London, UK.10/04/10

In bright sunshine, marchers led by the RMT brass band, filled the Embankment and marched up Whitehall to Trafalgar Square.
At the rally, NPC general secretary Dot Gibson said: “Our campaign to protect the welfare state and public services has brought together old and young alike because we recognize that whatever our age, we all need the support of a decent welfare system. Athens, Greece 11.03.10. — Tens of thousands of trade unionists and anti-capitalists demonstrated during a nationwide strike against the cash-strapped government’s austerity measures.
Protesters chanted, “Make the bosses pay” and “Where has all the money gone?” Union leaders hailed the general strike as an overwhelming success as public services ground to a halt in all major cities from Alexandroupoli in the north to Sitia in the south.
Thursday’s walkout by public and private sector workers, the second nationwide action to have taken place in the past two weeks, grounded flights, shut schools and halted public transport.
“Prime minister Papandreou has just returned from a tour of world leaders – including Nicolas Sarkozy in France, Angela Merkal in Germany and Barack Obama.They all congratulated him on his neoliberal reforms which have seen outrageous attacks on pensions, wages and job security. Now he has to face the anger of the Greek people and these strikes are just the beginning.”
Street clashes took place sporadically during the mainly peaceful demonstration with riot police firing volleys of tear gas and stun grenades in an attempt to brake up the protest. Skirmishes with police continued thought out the day until they petered out in the streets surrounding Athens Polytechnic.

Airline Staff Occupy Greek Finance Offices

Greek Workers Stage General Strike

Athens, Greece, – 24.02.10. Tens of thousands of Greeks took to the streets of the capital today as much of the country went on a 24-hour strike against government austerity measures. Sporadic clashes broke out between protesters and police who fired responded tear gas. Earlier workers across the country manned picket lines, preventing management and scab employees from gaining access to their workplace.
It is the second general strike in two weeks and coincides with growing anger at the EU’s response to the crisis. Public and private sector unions called the strike to protest a range of measures aimed at reducing Greece’s budget deficit. The government has announced a freeze on civil-service wages, cuts in public-sector entitlements and an increase in fuel prices.

British Soldier Heads Anti-War Demo

Lance Corporal Joe Glenton, a British soldier from York, who has recently returned from active service in Helmand province, Afghanistan, lead thousands of anti-war protesters through central London. London, UK. 24-10-09

The march attended by up-to 10,000 called for all British troops to be brought home from Afghanistan. Lance Corporal Glenton has been court-martialed for refusing to return to Afghanistan, now he faces up to two years in jail for desertion. Copenhagen, Denmark – 16.12.09. Thousands of protesters made a concerted attempt to enter the Bella Centre to hold a people’s climate summit. But they were stopped by police manning barricades and scuffles soon broke out. Police baton charged the crowd and fired teargas in an attempt to brake up the protest. At least 200 demonstrators were arrested.

Police Raid Christiania

Denmark, Copenhagen – 14.12.09. Police stormed Christiania. making multiple arrests. Around 200 people were placed under administrative detention and bused off to detention centers. Earlier that evening Naomi Klein addressed a “Climate Justice Action” party inside the neighborhood. However later in the evening, in unclear circumstances, the police surrounded the area, to which people responded by constructing barricades in the road outside the entrance of Christiania. A number of people threw bottles at police who answered with tear gas and water canon. Soon after large numbers of police entered Christiania.

Denmark, Copenhagen – 12.12.09. Danish police indiscriminately arrested hundreds of climate justice activists during a climate change protest made up of 100,000 people. Hundreds of people were held on the road in extremely cold weather, cuffed and forced into seated positions in lines. They expressed severe physical discomfort and had no access to water, medical attention or toilet facilities. Around 1000 have been removed from the site and taken away in police coaches to detention centers.

Calais, France – 22.09.09. French riot police dismantle the Afghan migrants “jungle” camp early this morning. Protesters attempted to stop the eviction and scuffles broke out with police. Over 278 people, around half of them under 18 were arrested. Bulldozers move in, mid morning, destroying the hovels the migrant’s called home.

Migrants Beaten & Arrested in Central Calais

Calais, France – 30.07.09. Two migrants were beaten and arrested in central Calais after leaving a mobile soup kitchen run by the French NGO Salam. The police assaulted the two after they detected the afghan’s reclining on the grass in the afternoon sun in front of the town hall. It is estimated that there are around 2000 migrants staying in Jungle camp in the Calais area hoping to enter Britain.

Calais, France – Aug 09. Portraits of afghan migrants. Approximately 800 Afghan men and boys many who are refugees from the West’s war in Afghanistan live in makeshift camps know as the ‘jungle’ on the outskirts of the port town of Calais. Most nights they try to stow away on trucks heading for Dover.

NOTTINGHAM, UK – 17.10.09. Hundreds of climate camp activists rushed the perimeter fences of Ratcliffe-on-Soar power station with the aim to shut it down. Scuffles flared as hundreds of protesters used bolt cutters and ropes to pull down sections of the electrified fence. During the skirmishes one policeman was airlifted to hospital due to heat exhaustion but later released. Over 50 people where arrested for a variety of offenses, including aggravated trespass and criminal damage. The 2,000mw coal-fired power station is owned by the energy company E.ON and said to be one of the largest producers of carbon dioxide in Britain.

Bio Fuel Rush

UK, London – 01.07.09. The Climate Rush held a Gala Dinner and Dance outside the Millennium Hotel in Grosvenor Square, Mayfair to protest against the deforestation of tropical forests to grow biofuel crops. The hotel was hosting a gala dinner for delegates at the World Agri Invest Congress, where business leaders and investors met growers and buyers in agriculture.

Bike Rush

UK, London – 01.06.09. Over 300 cyclists set off from Chatham House in St James Square and biked thought central London. Protesters dressed as suffragettes denounced the UK corporations responsible for climate change..They rode past the offices of BAA and E-ON, then on to Parliament square. It ended with a blockade of Westminster bridge. There protesters held a picnic, and stopped traffic for over an hour.

UK, London – 06.05.08. Art Not Oil Picketed the BP “100 years of business party” which took place in the British Museum, London. Protesters dressed as mourners and zombies blocked guests cars as they tried to enter the museum courtyard.

Climate Rush Cocktail Party

UK, London – 26.02.09. Climate Rush hosted cocktail party for the coal industry outside the Landmark Hotel on Marylebone Road, London. Coal UK presented celebratory awards to the most successful companies in the coal industry. Climate Rush offered an alternative awards based on the ecological damage that the coal industry is inflicting on the environment.
